NCMC Events From Around the State… August 9, 2010

1). High Point Museum (http://www.highpointmuseum.org/) presents Alexander’s Battalion Field Hospital in the Historical Park on Saturday, August 28, 10 am to 4 pm. Find out what would have been in store for you if you were a wounded Civil War soldier! Re-enactors will be interpreting the life of a Confederate Army surgeon and other medical personnel as well as demonstrating 19th century medical procedures and equipment.

2). Mount Airy Museum of Regional History presents Toast and Jam at the Mt. Airy Museum of Regional History on Saturday August 14, 5-7pm. Good Wine, Good Music, and a Taste of Mount Airy, all set in the Museum’s picturesque courtyard. This monthly program, scheduled for the second Saturday of each month (June-November) from 5:00-7:00 PM, will showcase a number of the regions wineries as well as local musical talent.

3). Museum of the Albemarle Join the Museum of the Albemarle in remembering the effect Hurricane Katrina had on New Orleans in August of 2005 on Sunday, August 22, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gaither Auditorium through a personal insight by Lieutenant Tom Huntley. Lieutenant Tom Huntley is a Coast Guard MH-60 helicopter pilot stationed at Air Station Elizabeth City. Less than twenty-four hours after Hurricane Katrina made landfall, LT Huntley and his team were on the ground in New Orleans to provide much needed security for urban search and rescue teams.

4). President James K. Polk State Historic Site The President James K. Polk site in Pineville will feature Threading the Story: The Form and Function of Spinning and Weaving on Aug. 14. Visitors will learn about spinning, weaving, knitting and natural dyeing. The market area will also feature the creations of local artisans. 2nd Saturdays takes place at all 37 State Historic Sites and museums administered by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources. The program was begun in order to connect North Carolina history with artists.

5). Weatherspoon Art Museum The Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro is pleased to present the exhibition Hans Hofmann: Circa 1950 (July 3-October 17). Hans Hofmann (American, born in Germany, 1880-1966) was an influential figure in post World War II American art. Celebrated for his exuberant, color-filled canvases and renowned as an inspirational teacher to generations of artists, Hofmann played a pivotal role in the development of Abstract Expressionism.

6). Historic Stagville State Historic Site Learning the Land: Native Americans at Stagville will offer tales from Kay Begay and flute music from Daniel Begay on August 14. Breads, baskets, digital art and decoupage will be for sale, along with hot dogs, hamburgers and roast corn. The generations-old Cherokee Butterbean Game, and other games, will bring joy to many. This final 2nd Saturdays program at the state historic sites and museums within the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources will offer arts, history and genuine North Carolina culture at venues all across the state.

7). Brunswick Town / Fort Anderson State Historic Site There’s no need to dig up dirt on famed archaeologist and storyteller Dr. Stanley South — he’s got nothing to hide, especially if you inquire about 1958-1968. In fact, South will eagerly share his historically-significant findings with the public at Brunswick Town/Ft. Anderson State Historic Site’s program Can You Dig It? — A Day with Stanley South: Archaeologist, Storyteller and Author on Saturday, Aug. 14, from 10 a.m-4 p.m.

8). SECCA SECCA curator Steven Matijcio will trace the historical path of the Look Again exhibition, surveying the evolution of the “trompe l’oeil” (trick of the eye) technique from ancient times, through the Renaissance and Surrealist periods, to early American painting and contemporary photo, video and installation. Talk is on Aug.12 at 7 p.m. The event is open to the public and free.

9). Port Discover Port Discover’s Second Saturday Science shoots for the skies on Saturday, August 14, when children will learn about the concepts of physics as they build their own rockets. The rockets will all be built of recycled materials, reinforcing Port Discover’s focus on environmentally-friendly activities. Leading the program will be William T. Younger, professor of physics and astronomy at the College of the Albemarle. The program begins at 11 a.m.

10). N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences Join Duke University biologist Sonke Johnsen for a detailed look into the world of marine bioluminescence and its use as an adaptation to help organisms hide, hunt and communicate. Johnsen’s multimedia presentation, Deep Light: Bioluminescence and Vision 2,000 Feet below the Bahamas, takes place at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences on Thursday, August 12 at 7pm. Free.

11). Battleship NORTH CAROLINA The Battleship is honored to announce The Blue and Gray Navies will tell the story of two ships named NORTH CAROLINA at the final 2nd Saturday Event on August 14, 2010 at the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm. The event is free with admission
