NCMC Events From Around the State… October 29, 2012


1). HandsOn!  the children’s museum in downtown Hendersonville, invites you to be part of “Healthy Kids Club-Superfood Heroes!” on Thursday, November 1st at 11am. This program will focus on 5 superfoods that are known to provide nutritional benefits for people of all ages. Kids will have an opportunity to touch, smell, and taste these foods and create a superfood hero mask to take home. Sponsored by the Henderson County Department of Public Health. Cost to attend is included in $5 admission and is free for museum members.There are limited spaces, so please call to sign-up.

2). Joel Lane Museum House Robin Simonton will give a talk on " Beyond the Gate: Stories of Historic Oakwood Cemetery” on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at 2 pm at the Visitors Center at 160 South Saint Mary’s Street, Raleigh, NC 27603. Admission will be $15 for the general public and $10 for members of the Joel Lane Historical Society. Refreshments will be served. Seating is limited, and advanced payment is required. Please call 919-833-3431 with your MasterCard or Visa, or mail a check to P O Box 10884, Raleigh NC 27605. Be sure to include the names of all in your party; nametags will serve as tickets. Tickets are non-refundable unless we must cancel the event.

3). N.C. Maritime Museum at Beaufort will offer two exciting programs for Halloween, Wednesday, October 31st. At noon in the R.J. Reynolds auditorium there will be a free program titled "Ghost Ships: Facts and Fictions". Come learn about the myths and mysteries surrounding two North Carolina shipwrecks, the Carroll Deering and Sarah D.J. Rawson. Later that evening join a guided kayak adventure by the light of the moon from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. (pre-registration and fee is required, must be an experienced kayaker, navigation lights will be provided).

4). Cape Fear Museum presents “I Voted” Free Day on Tuesday, November 6 from 9 AM – 5 PM, free with your “I Voted” sticker. Wear your “I Voted” sticker to the Museum on Election Day and receive free adult admission. Get out and vote, then stop by Cape Fear Museum to see “Cape Fear Treasures: Campaigning”. View a selection of political artifacts, including photographs, badges, posters, postcards, buttons, matchbooks, bumper stickers, yard signs, and even a thimble that encouraged voters in 1964 to pick Dan Moore as North Carolina’s governor. See how political paraphernalia has changed over the years.

5). Weatherspoon Art Museum  presents Sustainability Film: "The Island President" on Thursday, Nov 1, 6:30pm. “The Island President” is the story of President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives, a man confronting the literal survival of his country and its citizens. This film documents Nasheed’s first year of office, culminating in his trip to the Copenhagen Climate Summit in 2009. The discussion leader for the film will be Tom Patterson. Patterson is a second year graduate student in the UNCG Geography department. Film begins at 6:30pm in the Weatherspoon auditorium and is free.

6). Black Mountain College Museum & Arts Center  announces a hands-on workshop from 11:00 to 1:00 on Saturday, November 3 called “The Experiential, Hands-on Geometries of Buckminster Fuller” presented in conjunction with the exhibition Looking Forward at Buckminster Fuller's Legacy. Taught by Marnie Muller, one of our region's foremost authorities on the geometric work of architect, inventor and designer Buckminster Fuller, the two-hour workshop is open to all ages and promises to be both fun and interesting.

7). N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences What was the thing nature had spawned on the ocean floor? Find out when the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences hosts “The Phantom from 10,000 Leagues” on First Friday, November 2 at 7pm. Free. When charred, radioactive fishermen begin to drift ashore, a government agent investigates the phenomenon, only to find a hideous atomic mutant lurking beneath the waves and a secret lurking in the heart of a local marine biology professor. “Phantom” (1955) stars Kent Taylor (investigator), Michael Whalen (scheming Dr. King) and Cathy Downs (Mrs. Schemer).

8). SECCA presents “Film @ SECCA: William Kentridge” on Thursday, November 1, 7 p.m. As a preview of SECCA’s upcoming “The Artists” Film Series (curated by Iana Dontcheva) and a lens to consider the work of Frank Selby and Vibha Galhotra, please join us for this award-winning documentary featuring exclusive interviews with Kentridge as he works in his studio and discusses his artistic philosophy and techniques. The film will be begin at 7 p.m., is free and open to the public.

9). Kings Mountain Historical Museum Join Susan Patterson of “Sunflowers by Susan” at the Kings Mountain Historical Museum on Nov. 15th to create a beautiful table floral arrangement for your holiday gathering. Ms. Patterson will teach children how to create a centerpiece for their family’s upcoming fall gathering with local and natural materials that would have been available to early settlers of the area. The program, which is geared towards children ages 9 – 12, will begin at 4pm and the cost is $5 per participant. Space is extremely limited, so please contact the Kings Mountain Historical Museum to reserve a space.

10). N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher  Ever wondered what happens when the sun goes down at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher? Bring the family and your pillows to see for yourself at “Stars and Fishes,” a new event, on November 16, 2012. “Stars and Fishes” sheds light on the wonders of the night inside and outside the Aquarium doors. Star-gaze, learn to identify constellations and discuss the nocturnal behavior of local animals on a guided, night hike. Educators bring the outside in with live-animal presentations, too.
