NCMC Events From Around the State… November 5, 2012



1). Hands On!  will be open Monday, November 12th, 10am-5pm. There will be two great events featured: Santa will visit from 1-3pm. Write a letter for Santa and personally deliver it to him. Plenty of time to get those requests in before Christmas! This event is free with $5 admission/free for members. Looking for a special gift?” U Touched My Heart” is a company that creates handmade decorative, pottery keepsakes embossed with your child’s finger, hand or footprint. “U Touched My Heart" is donating a portion of their proceeds to benefit Hands On! Fees vary according to keepsake type. $14 pendant/$25 ornament/ $35-45 plaques.

2). N.C. Maritime Museum at Beaufort On Wednesday, November 7th at noon there will be a free lecture presented in the museum auditorium. Curator of Education, Lee Anne Gordon, will speak about the role that women played in whaling practices of the 18th and 19th century along the coast of America. On Thursday, November 8th at noon join Associate Curator Benjamin Wunderly for a kayak adventure in the waters around historic Beaufort. Learn about the history of this unique coastal town and its surrounding area while exploring the nearby salt marshes, pre-registration and fee required.

3). Weatherspoon Art Museum  at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition, “The Cone Sisters Collect” from November 3, 2012 through February 17, 2013. The Weatherspoon Art Museum first began collecting works of art in the 1940s, and received an astonishing bounty in 1949 when Etta Cone bequeathed part of her and her sister Claribel’s collection to the museum.

4). Mount Airy Museum of Regional History  presents the final History Talks of 2012: Fire Up the Stills – the Rise and fall of the Moonshiners in 19th Century Appalachian North Carolina on Saturday November 10 at 2pm. Author and Appalachian State University History Professor, Bruce Stewart, will talk about early Appalachian moonshining in the 1800s. History Talks programs are Free to the public.

5). Cameron Art Museum Actress Linda Lavin has chosen to give her art collection to Cameron Art Museum! Selections from Linda Lavin’s collection are now part of the current exhibition, The Transformative Power of Friendship, which tells an intertwined story of friendship and philanthropy. This public exhibition opening reception on Sunday, November 11, 2012 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, celebrates Lavin’s generosity and philanthropic leadership within our own community. Besides her thriving career as musician, actress and star of Broadway, film and television, her connoisseurship as an art collector focusses on leading Native American artists of the Southwest as well as Bay area and New York artists.

6). SECCA  presents “Event @ SECCA: Community Day” on Saturday, Nov. 10, noon - 4 pm. Come celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights in India, and the exhibition of works by the young Indian artist Vibha Galhotra, on this Community Day. Families can create lanterns to light up SECCA, learn traditional Indian dances, make art objects, play traditional games, and sample exotic food during an afternoon of new sights, sounds and smells. Art activities will also celebrate Frank Selby: Misunderstanding and Anne Kesler Shields: 50 Year Retrospective.

7). Museum of the Albemarle Museum of the Albemarle will hold “Pre-Schooler Time” on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at 10:00 am. Participants must be between the ages of 3 to 5 years old and must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-Schoolers will discover why beans, corn and squash are known as the “Three Sisters,” read a book and participate in a hands-on activity.

8). Historic Edenton Please join us for Dr. Marty Matthews talk at the Courthouse Thursday, November 8 at 7:00 p.m. His presentation is entitled, “Edenton 300: Maps, Memories and the Making of the Town on Queen Anne’s Creek.” Dr. Matthews did original research for this, and will have slides of many interesting items and will talk about some aspects of Edenton’s early history not generally seen or known. Dr. Matthews is Curator of Research for North Carolina State Historic Sites and Properties, and also Adjunct Professor of History and Public History at North Carolina State University.

9). CSS Neuse & Gov. Caswell Memorial presents “Navy and Marine Living History: The Blacksmith” on November 17 & 18. Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday Noon to 4 p.m. Special presentations will depict the blacksmith’s role during the Civil War. There will also be several reenactors demonstrating aspects of military and civilian life. Sutlers at the program will have items for sale. Artillery and infantry demos will be held both days.

10). N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher presents “Stars and Fishes Sleepover” on Friday, November 16, 2012 at 6 p.m.-9 a.m. What happens when the lights go off at the aquarium? The Stars and Fishes come out to play. Join us for this family sleepover where we learn about nocturnal animals and how to identify constellations. The program will include a night hike, star gazing, and animal encounters. Continue the fun as you prepare to sleep in front of our 235,000-gallon Cape Fear Shoals tank as sharks, eels, and other fishes swim close by. In the morning you will finish your adventure with a private, guided tour. Crafts, snacks, and breakfast are all included; dinner is not. For ages 5 and up. Children ages 5-17 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Fee: $45.00 per person. Preregistration required.
