The McColl Center for Visual Art, Charlotte, is offering a one-day workshop in Japanese Shibori Resist Dying, taught by Janet Lasher, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 27 ($25 members, $35 non-members, limited to 20 participants). A four-week session in Solarplate Etching begins the same day and runs through February 10, taught by Annabel Manning. The Orange County Historical Museum, Hillsborough, is seeking photographs, videos, artifacts and other items related to the desegregation of public schools in their home county. In February, a new special exhibit, With All Deliberate Speed, will open on this subject. Port Discover, Elizabeth City, will hold its Toddler Time on Thursday, Jan. 18th -- 2 and 3-year olds for one hour at 9:30 a.m.; 4 and 5 year olds at 11. Reservations are required -- (252) 338-6117. Critter Feeders, the theme, is also available to children visiting during normal museum hours of operation.

The current traveling exhibit at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, Raleigh, will continue through February 11: SPACE: A Journey to our Future. Also, the museum will celebrate Groundhog Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, February 2, and will open from 5-9 p.m. that day as part of downtown Raleigh's First Friday.

January 13 marks the opening of the newest IMAX nature film at Discovery Place, Charlotte -- Hurricane on the Bayou, telling the before, during and after story of Hurricane Katrina. Showtimes and ticket information are available at their website, or by calling (800) 935-0553.

Two half-day workshops for Community Historians are being offered at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum, Harkers Island. Sessions are free, but volunteers must attend both, on January 13 and January 27.

Reynolda House Museum of American Arts will host Grandma Moses: Grandmother to the Nation, a traveling exhibition, from January 27 to April 22, 2007. The opening reception is Friday, January 26, at 7 p.m. A series of special events include a March 3 symposium (fee), a Back to the Farm Community Day (March 25), five gallery talks, and folk musician Jeff Warner's concert on February 3.

The Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City, is planning a symposium on The Burnside Expedition, 1862, on Friday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 10 at 9 a.m. Reservations are required; call (252) 335-1453 for information.

The N.C. Maritime Museum, Beaufort, will host an exhibition, The Artistry of Charles McNeill, from February 3 through May 6, 2007.
