NCMC Events From Around the State… November 19, 2012


1). Museum of the Albemarle The Museum of the Albemarle will host the 8th Annual “Jingle Bells are Rocking at Museum of the Albemarle” on Friday, December 7, 2012. Pre-Schoolers three to five years of age with adult supervision will decorate houses from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. Kids of all ages (1-100+) will decorate houses from 3:30 pm until 4:45 pm. Learn basic architectural terms and the history of gingerbread at Christmas while decorating a medium size gingerbread house from the Lovin’ Oven with various candies. The only experience needed is a creative and open mind by all involved. However, the most important aspect of the workshop is to HAVE FUN! The program is $20.00 per house or $18.00 per house for FOMOA members if registered by Wednesday, November 21, 2012.

2). Kings Mountain Historical Museum On Saturday, December 1, 2012, we’ll be celebrating Christmas at KMHM. Join us as they’ll be various activities in the Museum Commons such as the 38th NC Regiment, Civil War re-enactors, spinning demonstrations by Lynn Eskridge and Victoria Johansson and Scherenschnitte, the historic German art of paper-cutting demonstrations by Linda Bell. After the City of Kings Mountain’s annual Christmas parade the Museum will re-open at 5:30pm for candlelight tours of the Robert Barber House until 8:30pm. The Toys, Games & Trains exhibit and model railway will be open for visitors as well.

3). Bellamy Mansion Museum The Bellamy Mansion Museum of History and Design Arts will undergo construction on Monday, November 19, 2012 to restore the mansion’s cistern and connect it to the surrounding irrigation system. Once completed, the project will allow the museum to collect and use rainwater when watering the gardens surrounding the site, rather than using the city’s municipal water. The project, which was funded by a grant from the Cape Fear Garden Club, will be completed by JB Lawn Sprinklers Inc. in four to five days.

4). Asheville Art Museum  presents “Lunchtime Art Break: Robert Morris: Mind / Body / Earth” on Friday, November 30 (12:00 – 1:00 p.m.) and led by Museum Curator Frank Thomson. The Asheville Art Museum is pleased to present a guided tour and discussion of “Robert Morris: Mind/Body/Earth”, a current exhibition featuring a wide range of works by the contemporary artist, including selections of his prints, drawings, sculpture and video works.

5). Cameron Art Museum presents “Annual Holiday Kids @ CAM” on December 8, 2012 12noon to 3pm. Bring your children to a very special and festive Holiday Kids @ CAM. The Music School of Wilmington will be providing jubilee music along with special guest musicians from the school performing holiday tunes. We will be offering a variety of holiday-themed art activities along with a gallery hunt. Also, a very special guest, Santa Claus is coming all the way from the North Pole to visit with the children and hand out treats, while he listens to each child’s wish list. You and your family will have a chance to craft art gifts and decorations to take home. This isn’t just for kids; it is fun for the whole family. The cost is $3 per child (members), $5 per child (non-members) and grown-ups are free.

6). HandsOn! Hands On!-A Child’s Gallery, the children’s museum located in downtown Hendersonville, is unveiling a new scavenger hunt called “Teeth” on Tuesday, November 27th. Request your copy of the scavenger hunt at the front desk, and test your observation skills & knowledge of the museum. It is sponsored by Drs. Reid & Reid, Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics.
7). Historic Oak View County Park presents “Sleigh Rides and Cider: A Winter Night at Oak View” on December 1, 2012, 5:00 - 7:30 pm. Get in the holidays spirit with your family and Historic Oak View at our annual winter event! Decorations and displays showing “Christmas at the Oak View Farm: How they celebrated from 1850 to 1950” will be on view in the Main House. Ride in a horse-drawn carriage through Oak View’s Pecan Grove, listen to holiday music and stories in the 1855 farmhouse, drink hot apple cider near the 1825 Plank Kitchen, buy handcrafted decorations and crafts, and, of course, don’t forget to visit with Old St. Nick! Homemade baked goods will also be available for purchase, which will benefit the Tenant House restoration project! This event, as always is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!

8). N.C. Maritime Museum at Beaufort Turkey, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie! Make a great Thanksgiving meal, but what would a pirate typically dine on? Come find out at one of our "Brown Bag Gam" lectures on Wednesday, November 28th at noon. Museum educator Christine Brin will discuss what a typical pirate meal consisted of, bring your lunch if you'd like to compare! That following Friday the Maritime Museum at Beaufort will host a reading and book signing by author Bland Simpson in honor of his newest work "Two Captains from Carolina". This book chronicles the lives of two 19th century mariners in the days before the Civil War. Please join us on Friday, November 30th from noon until 2 p.m.

9). Waterworks Visual Arts Center  presents Winter Exhibition, “Art of Faiths – Religions of the World: Tolerance and Diversity”, November 26, 2012 – February 9, 2013. Expressing one’s religious beliefs through visual expression has been a basic tenant of mankind throughout the ages. From Paleolithic cave art found in France and detailed clay and stone works by Aztec Indians, to the architectural masterpieces of construction and artistic detail found in cathedrals, mosques, and temples around the world – it is with us. Through an assemblage of photographs, paintings, and mixed media works, seven contemporary artists express their personal relationships to their faiths including Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity.

10). N.C. Transportation Museum  presents “Santa Train” on Nov. 23-24, Dec. 1-2, 8-9, 15-16, 22-23. Christmas is coming early this year at the N.C. Transportation Museum. Our most popular Christmas event, Santa Train, rolls out of the station Nov. 23-24 and weekends in December through Christmas. Each Saturday and Sunday, kids and their parents will be joined by elves on a train ride to remember. Kids will receive candy canes and oranges, a Southern Railway tradition dating back to the Great Depression. Santa Train tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for Seniors and Active Military, and $10 for children 3-12. Two and under always ride free.
