The Hickory Museum of Art plans a free Sunday Afternoon Jazz event as part of the Arbon Lane exhibit, with Donnie Propst & Friends from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Coe and Mezzanine Galleries. Also, the 7th Annual Art a La Carte is set to start at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 23rd, held by the HMA Guild. Call Mary Johnson at 828-327-8576 for information or to RSVP, by Monday the 16th. "Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!" also opens on April 21st.

Dick Thomas of the Piedmont Environmental Center will discuss the Center at the High Point Museum's Guild Meeting on Wednesday, April 18th.


On Thursday, April 19th at 6 p.m., the Western Carolina University Hunter Library will celebrate the one-year anniversary of the publication of the Encyclopedia of Appalachia with a free event in the AK Hinds University Center's theater -- a free event. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 12th, Historic Halifax will celebrate the 231st anniversary of the Halifax Resolves with a variety of free events at the historic site, including a special announcement by DCR Secretary Lisbeth Evans and a guest speaker, John Sanders, discussing the history of the William Davie House. The 5th Annual Benefit Auction and Luncheon will be held at Winston-Salem State University's Diggs Gallery on Saturday, April 14 (www.wssu.edu or 336-750-2458). Items in the auction can be previewed from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Gallery from April 10-12, or online at www.diggsauction.com starting on April 10.

On April 27 from 6-9 p.m., the Orange County Historical Museum, Hillsborough will celebrate the opening of its permanent exhibit on the Civil War, "The Wrath to Come."

Discovery Place, Charlotte, will hold a job fair to fill positions for the upcoming exhibit, "Gunther von Hagens' BODY WORLDS: The Anatomical Exhibition of Real Human Bodies" on Saturday, April 14th from 9 a.m. to noon. Discovery Place will also hold Astronomy Day on Saturday, April 21st from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.

The Textile Heritage Museum, Burlington, is holding an Open House on April 13, 14 and 15 from 1 to 5 p.m., including refreshments, demonstrations and exhibits: "WWII Uniforms & Historic Items" and "Vintage Quilts, Linens & Lace." The exhibits remain through June (website or 336-260-0038).

The Asheville Art Museum will host Deborah Belcher for its Piano Forte Series from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, April 15th, and will screen Josef and Anni Albers' "Art is Everywhere" on Saturday and Sunday, April 28 and 29 at 2 p.m.

The N.C. Maritime Museum, Beaufort, will hold an Earth Day Discussion on Carbon Offsets, an environmental tactic to combat global warming, on April 23rd at 3 p.m.

Crafty Critters is scheduled for the Mint Museum of Craft & Design as a drop-in activity from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 10, and the after school children's classics is The ABCs of Art: Finders Keepers (4:30 to 6 p.m.) at the Mint Museum of Art, same date.

A costumed interpreter representing George Washington will visit the N.C. State Capitol tomorrow, Wednesday, April 11th, along with a fife and drum corps from Tryon Palace, as well as an interpreter as Governor Richard Dobbs Speight (1792-95) -- with performances at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.

A Game Night & Auction fundraiser to benefit the Tobacco Farm Life Museum will be held on Saturday, April 14th, starting at 7 p.m., at the Wilson County Shrine Club, 3102 Forest Hills Road in Wilson ($20 per person). Call 919-284-3431 for an advance reservation, and save $5 per ticket!
