Artifacts available

Listing of Artifacts Owned by a Family in Western North Carolina: Available to a good museum home. Museums can select one or more items of interest, and inquire (see contact points below).

Kettle; copper; hand-hammered?; bought circa 1965 from an antique shop in NC.

School bell; hand-held; used by owner's grandfather in Boone area; has an image of his grandparents in front of a one-room schoolhouse; his mother is a student in the image; grandparents taught English and other topics.

Shoe Last; cast iron; adult form on one end and child's form on the other. Grandfather used to make & repair shoes; he used the shoe last.

Flat irons (2); strap handle; probably came from Maryland, but they're generic enough to use anywhere.

Desk; belonged to donor's father (Oliver Watson Godwin, Sr.); he helped put NC back on its feet during the Depression through working with the Farm & Home Administration; worked with Josephus Daniels; interesting construction; appears to date to circa 1875; 49" tall, 30" wide; 18" deep; peg construction.

Blanket chest; bought circa 1967 at an antique shop in Fayetteville; seems to have original lock; hinges are possibly original; some screws replaced; appears to have been hand-planed; dove-tailed construction.

Coffee grinder; made by Enterprise Mfg. Co.; brought from Maryland to Asheville (recently); no NC history but generic enough for display; top broken otherwise in good condition; 12" x 8."

Bowl with gilded edge; pressed glass; mold marks evident.

Relish dish; crystal; early 19th century.

1). The Cameron Art Museum, Wilmington will host Stories, Wine & Cheese, "Tales of Halloween Past," on Friday, October 26 at 7:30 p.m., and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 28. 2). Jonathan Horne will speak on Delftware on Sunday, October 28 at 3 p.m. at the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte.

3). J. Myrick Howard, author of "Buying Time for Heritage: How to Save an Endangered Historic Property," will speak at the New Hanover County Main Library, Wilmington, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13. Howard is also executive director of Preservation North Carolina.

4). In addition to earlier-announced exhibitions coming to SECCA, Winston-Salem, "Photo Grids," featuring four noted N.C. photographers, will be in the Balcony Gallery from October 27th through January 27, 2008.

5). The Craven Arts Council & Gallery's 2nd Annual Sculpture Show will feature 30 works of art selected from work of 139 sculptors, in an exhibit opening in New Bern on November 2 and remaining in the Gallery through Dec. 29 and outdoors through October 2008.

6). The McColl Center for Visual Art, Charlotte will open "Labels, Tags & Misconceptions: Work by Susan Harbage Page" on Friday, Nov. 16 with an opening reception from 6-9 p.m.; the exhibit runs through January 19, 2008.

7). The Centennial Celebration of the Briles House will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the house at 1103 N. Main Street, High Point, organized by the High Point Museum, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in conjunction with the Junior League of High Point.

8). The Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro will open an Atrium Exhibition featuring James Tucker on Saturday, Nov. 3; the exhibit will remain through February 11, 2008. Also scheduled are Artist Talks by Falk Visiting Artist Janine Antoni -- Part 1 at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, and Part 2 at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8.

9). The North Carolina Maritime Museum, Beaufort, will have a book signing by Mamre Marsh Wilson for "A Guide to North Carolina's Historic Beaufort" from 2-4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, and a lecture on "Sustainable Seafood" will be from 11-1:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 ("dutch treat" at a local restaurant, call 252-728-7317 for reservations). The Museum will also host a Cape Lookout Photographic Expedition, Nov. 9-11 -- call the Museum for fee and reservation information.

10). The Cape Fear Museum, Wilmington offers Winter Jazz with the Bob Russell Trio on Friday, Nov. 2; Learning Center: Cape Fear Indians on Saturday, Nov. 3; and Earth Connections for Junior Girl Scout Day, also on Nov. 3. The Cape Fear Indians Learning Center is also offered on Nov. 10, 17 and 24. Sunday, Nov. 4 is Residents Free Day; and the Family Science Saturday on Nov. 17 from 10-11:30 a.m. is "Kitchen Chemistry."

11). Mike Daniel will present "Pirates, Shipwrecks & Treasures" on Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at the Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City -- call 252-335-1453 for more info on the free program.

12). The Waterworks Visual Arts Center, Salisbury will open three exhibits on Friday, Nov. 16, with a free opening reception from 6-8 p.m. The exhibits -- "Three Windows," a video and sound installation by Jody Elff; "Disposable Views," paintings and prints by Xiaoze Xie; and "Visible Traces," paintings by Lori Esposito -- will remain through February 2, 2008.

13). The N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher will hold its "Ft. Fisher Hermit's School of Common Sense" programs on Saturday, Nov. 3, Sunday, Nov. 11 and Sunday, Nov. 25; "Behind the Scenes" tours are set for Sunday, Nov. 4, Thursday, Nov. 8, Sunday, Nov. 11, Thursday, Nov. 15, Sunday, Nov. 18, Sunday, Nov. 25, and Thursday, Nov. 29. 1). Port Discover, Elizabeth City will hold "Science of the Dark" on Tuesday, October 30 and Wednesday, October 31 during regular operating hours from 1 to 5 p.m.

2). The Light Factory, Charlotte will present "River Docs: A Catawba River Narrative" with an opening reception from 7-9 p.m. on November 15. Also, an upcoming film on October 23 is "Dr. Bronner's Magic Soapbox: a documentary about uniting mankind, one bottle of soap at a time" at 7 p.m.

3). The N.C. Civil War Tourism Council will begin taking applications from organizations for its new grant program to aid Civil War initiatives in North Carolina. Grant applications need to be postmarked by November 21st. For more information and grant criteria, please visit the website at www.nccivilwar.com.

4). SciWorks, Winston-Salem will host an adult information program, "Fighting Cancer with Your Fork" with speaker Julie L.G. Lanford, on Tuesday, November 13 at 7 p.m.

5). The Onslow County Museum, Richlands, will host its 31st Annual Art & Craft Festival "Museum Fest" on Saturday, November 3. Artisans, crafters, food vendors or community organizations interested in participating should review the application online at www.co.onslow.nc.us or call (910) 324-5008.

6). The Third Annual Western N.C. Pottery Festival will be held on November 3 including a juried exhibition, in Dillsboro. Admission is $2, includes a raffle ticket. Visit www.mountainlovers.com for more details.

7). The Diggs Gallery at Winston-Salem State University will hold a "Lunch & Learn" will Dr. Achamyeleh Debela at noon on Saturday, October 20th at the Anderson Conference Center -- tickets are $12 including lunch; call (336) 750-2458 to reserve seats. The discussion is in conjunction with the "Continuity and Change: Three Generations of Ethiopian Artists" exhibition on view in the Gallery through December 8.

8). The Asheville Art Museum will open "Lines of Discovery: 150 Years of American Drawings" on November 9, with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Check the website for related programming. The exhibit will remain through February 10, 2008.

9). The Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro will host the UNCG New Music Festival from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, and a lecture by Mark Gottsegen on "Pollock or Not: A Tale of Hubris, Money, and the Love of Art," at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, October 29. The film on November 1 at 7 p.m. is "Strange Culture."

1.) The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, Raleigh is hosting its annual Chemistry Day on Saturday, October 20th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free event includes several activities (small fee for optional gem mining), including a "Fun with Liquid Nitrogen" presentation at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The following Saturday, Oct. 27, will feature Dr. Pete Makovicky's free presentation, "Beyond Jurassic Park: New Insights into Sickle-clawed Dinosaurs," at 12:30 p.m. in the auditorium, in conjunction with the opening of "Dinosaurs: Ancient Fossils, New Discoveries."

2). The Fall Into Folk Art Show, Sale & Supper will be held at the Hickory Museum of Art on Saturday, October 20th, with a free event from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by a talk by David Steel, curator of "Homegrown and Handmade III" in the Mezzanine Gallery. Supper follows at 7 p.m. (for ticket prices and other information, call 828-327-8576). Steel will also give a gallery talk on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2:30 p.m.

3). In conjunction with its current exhibit, Reynolda House, Winston-Salem plans an art trip on Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., including stops at the Carolinas Aviation Museum, Charlotte, and the N.C. Transportation Museum, Spencer. For fees, information and reservations, call 336-758-5900.

4). The N.C. Transportation Museum, Spencer is hosting the AACA Antique Car Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20th, and Halloween events -- The Pumpkin Patch Fair on Saturday, Oct. 27, and a night train at the Haunted Roundhouse from 6:30-9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Oct. 27.

5). "Art 21: Art in the Twenty-First Century" Film & Discussion will be held at the Main Branch, Wilmington Public Library ("Protest," Wed. Oct. 17, noon, and "Ecology," Wed. Oct. 24, noon), and also offered at the Cameron Art Museum, Wilmington -- "Protest" at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, and "Ecology" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25 - free and open to the public at either location.

6). The Tobacco Farm Life Museum, Kenly will hold its "Fall Heritage Day" on Saturday, October 27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (free).

7). The High Point Museum will hold the North States Rifles Civil War Reenactment from 10-4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27 and from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, October 28.

8). The Gregg Museum of Art & Design, Raleigh will exhibit "Sock Monkey Madness & The Red Heel Dream" from October 25-December 20, with an opening reception from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, October 25th, and a Gallery Talk at 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 6.

The North Carolina Museums Council has announced that the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville has been selected as this year's recipient of the benefits of the FOCoS program (Free On-site Consultation Service) funded by the NCMC. One or two consultants established by the Council will visit the Data Center over a two day period to assess and advise the museum and provide a detailed report of recommendations based on the study areas requested by the Data Center. The selection committee for this year's applicants consisted of Richard Scieford, NCMC vice president (vicepresident@ncmuseums.org), Kathryn Beach (professional development chair) and Terra Steinbeiser (membership chair). Applications for a future FOCoS visit are being accepted now for the 2008-09 fiscal year -- visit http://www.ncmuseums.org/, and click on "NCMC Programs" to find information and application details.

1. Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, will host "The Sublime Nine," an art exhibition of work by nine art seniors, opening Thursday, Oct. 18 in the Fine Art Museum. A reception will be held that day from 5-7 p.m.; the show remains through December 1. Also on display: "Faces of Change: Migrant Workers in Western North Carolina" and "Nexus Press: Artist-Made Books Large and Small."

2). The Greensboro Children's Museum is preparing for the Make Believe Ball 2007, which will be held on October 20 from 5-8 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person in advance, $20 at the door (336-574-2898, extension 308).

3). The N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher, Kure Beach, will hold "Trick-or-Treat Under the Sea" on Thursday, October 25 from 5-8:30 p.m., closing at 2:30 p.m. that day to prepare for the special event. 4). The Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City will host "Boo!" on October 19 from 4-5:30 p.m. for students from 4th through 8th grade (pre-registration and payment required by Oct. 15 - call 252-335-1453), and will hold a Cemetery Walk in the Episcopal Cemetery on Saturday, October 20 from noon until 4 (free, open to the public).

5). Diggs Gallery, WSSU, Winston-Salem, will host a presentation by the Quiltmakers of Gee's Bend on Thursday, October 11 at 7 p.m. (Dillard Auditorium, Albert H. Anderson Center). Call Belinda Tate at 336-750-2458 for more information.

6). Furniture designer Bob Williams, of Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, Taylorsville, will speak at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 19 at the Asheville Art Museum. Free with museum admission to non-members.

7). Rock Laser Shows are returning to SciWorks, Winston-Salem. Check the website for schedules -- shows are set for October 12, 13, 19 and 20, as well as October 26 and 27 featuring a special Halloween Laser Show. All tickets are sold at the door (no advance tickets).

8). 10). "Contemporary, Cool and Collected" is a new exhibition of privately-held contemporary art, opening October 20 at the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, and remaining through December 30th. Several events will be held related to the exhibit -- visit the website for details.

11). The N.C. Museum of History, Raleigh will open "Mysteries of the Lost Colony" and "A New World: England's First View of America from the British Museum" on October 20, remaining through January 13, 2008. Several special programs related to the exhibit are set for October 10, 20, 25 and 27 -- check the website for details. The Museum will also host the Twelfth Annual American Indian Heritage Celebration on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

12). The Johnston County Heritage Center, Smithfield, will present its third annual Ghost Walk at Riverside Cemetery on Thursday, October 25 from 7-9 p.m. Admission charged; 919-934-2836 for details.

13). The Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex, Fayetteville, will offer Old-Time Music on October 10 and 24 at 7 p.m.; will give an Exhibit Tour on Saturday, October 20 at 2 p.m.; and will have its "From Our Hands" Family Day at the Poe House on Sunday, October 28 from 1-5 p.m.

14). An exhibit featuring paintings by students who have attended a watercolor workshop will be exhibited at the N.C. Maritime Museum, Beaufort from November 3 through January 13. A slide presentation, "Into Africa: A Safari in Tanzania and Kenya," will be given at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10. Halloween Night at the Museum is Tuesday, October 30 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. (admission; 252-728-7317 for reservations). Other activities and trips are planned as well.

15). Storyteller Cynthia Brown will tell Ghost Stories in the Graveyard in the cemetery at Greensboro Historical Museum, starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 27th -- free event.

16). The Museum of Coastal Carolina, Ocean Isle Beach, will present a lecture about barrier island buffer systems on October 9 at 7 p.m.; special activities during the N.C. Oyster Festival on October 20-21; a guided beach walk on Friday, October 26 from 5:30-7 p.m. during an astronomical high tide (pre-registration required (910-579-1016); and author/educator Stanley Opalka will discuss his book, "Escape from Russia," at 7 p.m. on November 13.

17). "The Art of Looking" is the Gallery Talk topic at the Ackland Art Museum, Chapel Hill, on October 12 at 6:45 p.m. (free).

18). Second Saturday Science at Port Discover, Elizabeth City will be Amoebas in Motion on Saturday, Oct. 13, and Fabulous Fall on Saturday, November 10 (9:30 and 11 a.m.); Toddler Time on November 15 is Finger-paint with Leaves; and Make It-Take It for November is Nature's Colors.

19). Historic Oak View Park, Raleigh, will hold Pecan Day on November 10 from 10 a.m. to noon (free event).

20). Tryon Palace, New Bern will join in on the city's MUMfest Weekend with free garden tours and admission to the Gardens (interior Palace tours still require a ticket) from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, October 12-13, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m on Sunday, October 14. Heritage plants will also be sold on Friday and Saturday. Also, on Thursday, October 25, Diana Bell-Kite will speak on "The Stanly-Spaight Duel and Honor Culture in the Antebellum South" at 7 p.m. at the Visitor Center Auditorium.

21). Bennett Place State Historic Site will offer "Life in the Carolinas During the Civil War" on October 13-14 (free).

22). "Making the Mold, Breaking the Mold: The Art of Tom Spleth" opens on October 25 at the Gregg Museum of Art & Design, N.C. State University, and will remain through December 20.

23). The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, Raleigh is organizing a Dismal Swamp Adventure for Friday, Oct. 22-Sunday, Oct. 24 -- for fee and registration information, call 919-733-7450, extension 555.

24). The Cape Fear Museum, Wilmington will host Family Science Saturday: "Amongst Animals," on Saturday, October 20 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

25). The President James K. Polk State Historic Site, Pineville will celebrate the 212th birthday of President Polk on Saturday, November 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donations are appreciated, but the event is free and open to the public.

1). "Check Your Insides Out - From Top to Bottom!" will open on October 13 at SciWorks, Winston-Salem, a touring exhibit focused on the prevention of cancer. It will remain through January 5. SciWorks will also host its annual HarvestFest on Saturday, October 27th from 11 to 5.

2). On October 13, The Health Adventure, Asheville will hold its eighth annual fall gala, "Destinations of Adventure: A Celebration to Remember," at Dove Air, Inc, a private aircraft hanger. For info or tickets, call 828-254-6373, ext. 307.

3). Renowned ceramists Don Reitz and John Jessiman are set to visit Western Carolina University's School of Art and Design on Tuesday, October 16, with demonstrations from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 4 p.m., followed by slide presentations from 7-9 p.m. Call 828-227-3595 for details.

4). The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences will open "Glimpses of Nature" (nature photography) at the Nature Art Gallery on October 5, remaining through December 2, and a traveling exhibit, "Dinosaurs: Ancient Fossils, New Discoveries" opens October 27 and remains through March 2, 2008 (admission fee). Upcoming special events include a First Friday event on November 2 from 5-9 p.m.; and a Fossil Fair on November 3 from 9-5.

5). Public programs at the Cameron Art Museum, Wilmington include a Theatre Discussion with Justin Cioppa at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7; the film "Broadway: The American Musical," episodes 5 and 6, at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11; and music featuring the Barn Raisers from 7-8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12.

6). The Wheels Through Time Museum, Maggie Valley greeted motorcycling icon Willie G. Davidson and 13 other Harley Davidson executives on Sept. 27th. In addition to the special guests' interest in the range of history represented at the museum, they were also studying the displays in preparation for a new Harley-Davidson Museum slated for downtown Milwaukee, WI.

7). The Friends of Oriental's History will have its annual meeting on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. at the Oriental History Museum, 802 Broad Street.

8). Danny Lloyd, photographer, will speak on "Birds are Part of Nature's Art" at the Bank of the Arts, New Bern, on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. (252-638-2577).

9). Reynolda House, Winston-Salem has two talks scheduled: on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 5:30 p.m., John Hallmark Neff will give a gallery talk in conjunction with "Wings of Adventure: Smith Reynolds and the Flight of 898 Whiskey," and on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 5:30 p.m., Joseph Corn will give a lecture based on his book, "The Winged Gospel: America's Romance with Aviation, 1900-1950."

10). SECCA, Winston-Salem, is planning a fall tour & lunch to the N.C. Museum of Art from Winston-Salem for "Landscapes from the Age of Impressionism," on Friday, Nov. 16 starting at 8:30 a.m. at SECCA. For fees and reservations, call 336-725-1904, ext. 17. Upcoming Cinema SECCA films include Alain Resnais' "Private Fears in Public Places" (Oct. 7 at 2 p.m.) and "In the Shadow of the Moon" at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1 and 2 p.m. on Nov. 4. The opening reception for SECCA's "Contemporary North Carolina Photography from the North Carolina Museum of Art's Collection" and "Susan Jamison: Tatting Tales" will be on Friday, Oct. 26 from 7-9 p.m. An Art Talk on contemporary North Carolina photography precedes the opening event at 6:30 p.m.

11). The North Carolina Collection Gallery, UNC Chapel Hill will present the exhibit "A Knight to Remember: The Life & Legacy of Sir Walter Raleigh," opening on October 18 and remaining through January 31, 2008. On a complementary topic to the exhibit, Dr. Kim Sloan of the British Museum's Department of Prints and Drawings will lecture on "John White: An Elizabethan Gentleman, Limner and Governor of the New World," on Monday, Oct. 22 following a reception in the Gallery that begins at 5 p.m.

12). "An Apple a Day" is the theme for Port Discover, Elizabeth City's Toddler Time on Thursday, October 18th.

13). Pre-Schooler Time at Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 11 will allow ages 3 to 5 to see fire equipment and talk with firefighters from the Elizabeth City Fire Department.

14). Discovery Place, Charlotte will host the CMC Body Worlds Health Fair on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., including a blood drive and other activities.

Preservation grants offered

2008 NCPC Preservation Grants

The North Carolina Preservation Consortium (NCPC) is accepting applications for preservation grants from libraries, archives, museums, historic sites, and other heritage institutions in North Carolina. Projects may include the preservation of books, manuscripts, journals, documents, photographs, film, sound recordings, maps, architectural drawings, art, and artifacts. The maximum award is $2,000.00. Application deadline is January 15, 2008. Program details and an application are available on the NCPC Web site: http://www.ncpreservation.org/.

The Carteret County Public Library in Beaufort was awarded $1,500 to preserve the Ethel T. Elliott Collection which contains manuscripts, bound volumes, ancestry charts, family histories, indexes, documents, and microfilm. Elliott was a professional genealogist and historian.

The DeTamble Library at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg was awarded $1,500 to preserve film slides, photographs, negatives, and contact sheets in the College Archives that document the history of the St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort was awarded $1,700 to fund a preservation and collection assessment of nautical objects and artifacts that pertain to North Carolina's maritime history and culture.

The Prezell R. Robinson Library at Saint Augustine's College in Raleigh was awarded $1,300 to preserve the George "Pup" Williams Collection which includes awards, correspondence, contracts, newspaper articles, yearbooks, photographs, oral interviews, flags, clothing, plaques, and trophies. Williams is a renowned Olympic Track Coach and an alumnus of Saint Augustine's College.
