NCMC Events From Around the State… November 26, 2012


1). Joel Lane Museum House will sponsor its annual “Colonial Christmas Open House” celebration on Saturday, December 1, 2012 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, and donations are requested. Colonel Joel Lane was a founding father of North Carolina’s capital city and an officer in the Militia during the American Revolutionary War. The house will be decorated with traditional greenery and will reflect the very different way in which colonists and early Americans celebrated the Christmas holiday. Information about the house and grounds will be offered by costumed docents; re-enactors will demonstrate scenes of 18th-century life; the sounds of live music will fill the air; and other interpreters will entertain children using colonial games and crafts through the “Hands-on History” program.

2). Weatherspoon Art Museum presents “The Next Think Tank Thursdays” on Thursday, Nov 29, 6:30pm. Discover the connections between seemingly unrelated ideas in this new series that looks at contemporary culture by pairing scholars with community experts. Each program will explore two ideas in less than 60 minutes with ample time for questions and comments from the audience. Test your creative thinking skills or just come to have fun!

3). N.C. Maritime Museum at Beaufort The 2012 dive season on the Queen Anne’s Revenge wreck site has come to a close and archeologists have again pulled new pieces of history from Blackbeard’s famous ship. Join Nautical Archeologist David Moore as he reveals some of the recent findings on the “Q.A.R.” project. Wednesday December 5th at 12 noon in the Museum auditorium. The lecture is free and guests are welcome to bring their lunch to this “Brown Bag Gam”.

4). Asheville Art Museum The Big Crafty celebrates its 5th birthday on Sunday, December 2 with its 10th handmade, heartfelt, good-time event in partnership with the Asheville Art Museum, and all Asheville is invited to partake in the indie shopping fun! Join us for the event that Country Living magazine named one of the "Nation's 50 Coolest Craft Fairs" (November 2012)! Sunday, December 2 from 12-6pm at the Asheville Art Museum. Free & fun for the whole family! A highly select group of 75 talented indie artists and crafters will be on hand with one-of-a-kind gifts to please one and all! And in our tradition, it’ll be a great fair with DJ’d tunes by Whitney Shroyer (aka Dr Filth), goodies from Short Street Cakes and beverages both warm and frosty.

5). Kings Mountain Museum On Saturday, December 1, 2012, we’ll be celebrating Christmas at KMHM. Join us as they’ll be various activities in the Museum Commons such as the 38th NC Regiment, Civil War re-enactors, spinning demonstrations by Lynn Eskridge and Victoria Johansson and Scherenschnitte, the historic German art of paper-cutting demonstrations by Linda Bell. After the City of Kings Mountain’s annual Christmas parade the Museum will re-open at 5:30pm for candlelight tours of the Robert Barber House until 8:30pm. The Toys, Games & Trains exhibit and model railway will be open for visitors as well.

6). Tryon Palace presents “Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival at Tryon Palace” on Saturday, December 1 ~ 7:30 p.m. Cullman Hall, North Carolina History Center. The Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival is pleased to present the second concert of our inaugural season in New Bern. The concert is on Saturday, December 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the North Carolina History Center's Cullman Performance Hall. Information about the concert and how to purchase tickets is below. World-renowned artists Thomas Sauer, piano and Amit Peled, cello will join me for this concert. Both have performed with the festival for many years in Greenville and I am very much looking forward to performing with them in New Bern for this special concert.

7). Blowing Rock Art & History Museum In culmination with the last day of the Bob Timberlake portion of the North Carolina Treasures exhibit, BRAHM is hosting a book signing with Timberlake featuring his latest book, “Life’s Lessons.” The artist and author will be at BRAHM from 3-5 pm following the downtown Blowing Rock Christmas Parade on Saturday, November 24, 2012.

8). Museum of the Albemarle “Holiday Open House ~ A Polar Express Adventure” on Saturday, December 1, 2012, 1:00 pm –4:00 pm. Experience the sights and sounds of the holidays during the Museum of the Albemarle’s Holiday Open House “A Polar Express Adventure” on Saturday, December 1st from 1:00 pm—4:00 pm. Children and adults will delight in the Albemarle Railroad Club’s O scale train display of the Polar Express. Members of the club will be on hand to operate and discuss their display. Polar Express themed decorations will adorn a spectacular lobby tree. Junior Docents will lead several creative activities giving visitors the opportunity to make a special Polar Express bell ornament for their own tree. Polar Express themed refreshments will be available for your enjoyment.

9). Bellamy Mansion Join the Burgwin-Wright House and the Bellamy Mansion Museum of History and Design Arts on Sunday, December 9, 5:00-8:00 p.m. for A Christmas Stroll Through the Past. Celebrate the season with an evening filled with holiday decorations, music, dancing, period costumes, refreshments, and more! Take a complimentary trolley ride, provided by Wilmington Trolley Company, between the two houses, or stroll through hundreds of luminaries lining Market Street and the Kenan Fountain. Admission is $25 for Adults ($20 if purchased before 12/1), $5 for Children ages 5-12, and Free for Children under 5. Tickets are on sale now at the Burgwin-Wright House, Bellamy Mansion Museum,

10). HandsOn! invites you to come to the 2nd class of a brand new program. “Learning Spanish -Creatively” will be held on Friday, December 7th, 2012 at 11am. Students will learn basic Spanish vocabulary and colors through games, dramatic play, movement and songs for this 3 week series: November-December series is “Feliz Navidad and Action Words”. Repetition is very important for children to learn a language. The class is taught by Colleen Schnitzer a freelance theatre, Spanish instructor and mother of three. Colleen has taught theatre from Seattle to North Carolina and most recently at Kanuga Conference Center. Hands On! is thrilled that Colleen is s haring her talents at the museum.
